Moving Home to New Zealand?
Whether you’re a Kiwi returning home after living in Australia or you’re making the move to New Zealand for the first time, Overseas Packers & Shippers can coordinate your belongings from your home in Australia through to your new home across the Tasman.
With 50 years of international moving experience, New Zealand is one of our busiest international moving routes. We operate regular shared container (Groupage) services to both the North and South Islands, as well as FCL and LCL services through ports throughout New Zealand.
Whether you’re moving a few boxes, selected furniture or an entire household, our Moving Consultants can help you choose the most suitable service based on the size of your shipment, destination, timeframe and budget.
Our experienced team can take care of the professional packing and shipping in Australia, while our trusted New Zealand moving partners coordinate customs and biosecurity clearance and delivery at your destination.
Shipping Your Belongings to New Zealand
We offer a range of shipping options to New Zealand, from our regular Groupage services to the North and South Islands through to LCL, sole-use FCL containers and air freight.
Regular Groupage – Shared Container Services
New Zealand is our busiest Groupage route, with regular shared container services operating to both the North and South Islands.
Groupage is ideal if you don’t have enough belongings to fill your own shipping container. Your shipment is professionally packed and consolidated with other Overseas Packers & Shippers customers moving to New Zealand, so you only pay for the container space your belongings require.
This makes Groupage particularly suitable for Kiwis returning home with a smaller household, couples and individuals moving across the Tasman, or anyone taking only part of their household belongings.
Because we regularly consolidate shipments for New Zealand, we can arrange collection on an agreed date that suits your move. Your belongings can then be held securely at our Brisbane warehouse at no additional storage charge while awaiting loading into the next available Overseas Packers & Shippers Groupage container.
This no-additional-charge storage applies only from the agreed uplift date until the shipment is loaded into the next available Overseas Packers & Shippers Groupage container. It is not a general free-storage offer.
Once the container arrives in New Zealand, our trusted destination partner coordinates the customs and biosecurity clearance process before arranging delivery to your new home.
Our Groupage services cater for customers moving to destinations across both the North and South Islands, not just the major cities.

Full Container Load – FCL
For larger household moves, a 20ft or 40ft sole-use container may be the most suitable option.
With FCL, the container is used exclusively for your belongings, so there’s no need to wait for other customers’ shipments before it can depart.
New Zealand has a number of major ports, so we can arrange your shipment through the port that best suits your final destination. Once your container arrives, our New Zealand partner’s extensive branch network means your move can be handled by a local team familiar with your area, helping provide a more personal and efficient delivery service to your new home.
Depending on the volume of your household shipment and the vehicle being moved, it may also be possible to ship a car or other vehicle in the same container as your household belongings.
LCL – Less than Container Load
LCL provides another option for smaller shipments that don’t require a full container.
Unlike our Groupage service, your shipment travels through the shipping line’s LCL network rather than waiting to be consolidated into an Overseas Packers & Shippers shared container. This can be useful if you have a smaller shipment but would prefer an earlier departure than the next available Groupage service.
We can arrange LCL services via ports throughout New Zealand, giving us flexibility when selecting the most appropriate routing for your destination.
Air Freight
For very small shipments or belongings you need sooner, air freight may also be available.
Air freight is generally faster than sea freight but is more expensive, so some customers choose to send the majority of their belongings by sea and a smaller selection of essential items by air.
Our Moving Consultants can compare the available options and help you determine which service best suits your move.
New Zealand Customs & Biosecurity
New Zealand has strict customs and biosecurity requirements, particularly for household belongings that have been used outdoors or may have come into contact with soil, plants or animals.
Items such as bicycles, golf clubs, camping equipment, garden tools, outdoor furniture, footwear and vacuum cleaners may require particular attention before they’re shipped.
We’ll provide you with the relevant New Zealand customs and biosecurity information during the quoting or pre-move survey stage, so you know what needs to be considered before packing day.
For the latest detailed requirements, refer to the current FIDI New Zealand Customs Guide and official New Zealand Customs and Ministry for Primary Industries information.
Professional Packing for New Zealand
Our experienced international removalists can professionally pack and prepare your belongings for their journey to New Zealand.
From furniture and everyday household belongings through to china, artwork, fragile pieces and other special items, we use packing methods and materials appropriate for international transportation.
On packing day, our team will also prepare an inventory of your shipment, which assists with the customs and biosecurity clearance process when your belongings arrive in New Zealand.
Taking Your Car or Motorbike Home to New Zealand?
If you’re returning home to New Zealand, you may also be considering taking your car, motorbike or other vehicle with you.
Overseas Packers & Shippers can arrange international shipping for vehicles to New Zealand and, depending on the size of your household shipment and vehicle, it may be possible to ship your vehicle in the same container as your household belongings.
Vehicles imported into New Zealand must meet applicable NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) requirements before they can be registered and used on New Zealand roads.
The requirements vary depending on the vehicle, its age and specifications, and your individual circumstances. They can include evidence relating to ownership, safety and emissions standards, fuel consumption or CO2 information, and vehicle compliance.
If you’re a New Zealander returning home with a vehicle you’ve owned and used while living in Australia, different provisions may apply under NZTA’s immigrants’ vehicles rules.
We strongly suggest checking your particular vehicle with an NZTA-approved entry certifier before committing to ship it. This can help establish whether the vehicle is suitable for import and what documentation or evidence will be required for entry certification.
New Zealand’s Clean Car Standard applies to many vehicles imported into New Zealand.
Vehicles subject to the Standard need to be allocated to a CO2 account as part of the import and entry-certification process. If you need to establish your own CO2 account, a RealMe login may be required.
Because vehicle requirements and Clean Car Standard rules can change, we recommend checking the latest information directly with NZTA before shipping.
Once you’ve established that your vehicle is suitable for import into New Zealand, our Moving Consultants can provide a quote and discuss the most appropriate shipping option.
Where your vehicle is travelling in a container with your household belongings, the household effects are professionally packed and loaded first. A protective bulkhead is constructed between the household shipment and the vehicle before the vehicle is loaded and secured for transportation.
We can also arrange the international shipping of motorbikes, boats, jet skis, caravans and trailers, subject to the applicable New Zealand import requirements.

Moving to New Zealand – Frequently Asked Questions
I'm a New Zealander returning home from Australia. Can you move me?
Absolutely. Around 90% of the customers we move to New Zealand are Kiwis returning home after living in Australia. Whether you’re taking an entire household or just the belongings you’ve accumulated while living here, we can coordinate your move from your Australian home through to your new home in New Zealand.
Do you offer shared container services to both the North and South Islands?
Yes. New Zealand is our busiest Groupage route, and we operate regular shared container services catering for customers moving to destinations across both the North and South Islands. Groupage allows you to share container space with other Overseas Packers & Shippers customers and pay only for the space your shipment requires. If you’re unsure whether Groupage is suitable for your particular destination or timeframe, our Moving Consultants can explain the next available service and other options.
What items do New Zealand biosecurity authorities pay particular attention to?
New Zealand has strict biosecurity requirements designed to prevent unwanted pests and diseases entering the country. Items that have been used outdoors or may contain soil, plant material, seeds or other organic matter can require particular attention. This may include bicycles, golf clubs, camping and sporting equipment, garden tools, outdoor furniture, footwear and vacuum cleaners. We’ll provide current customs and biosecurity information before your move so you know what needs to be cleaned or declared.
Can I ship my car to New Zealand with my household belongings?
In some cases, yes. Depending on the size of your vehicle, volume of household belongings and container required, it may be possible to transport both in the same container. Vehicle import and registration requirements apply in New Zealand, so these should be checked before shipping. Our Moving Consultants can provide a shipping quote and explain the transportation options available.
